A Map to Black Studies Collection

Black Literary Criticism/Studies and Gaines Criticism

The "Black Literary Criticism/Studies and Gaines Criticism" subsection seeks to highlight the literary contributions of Black authors through critical analysis of their work. This includes analyses of the work of Ernest J. Gaines, a Black Southern writer for whom the Ernest J. Gaines Center was founded, which now houses the Map to Black Studies collection. Black literary criticism and studies arose in response to the exclusion of Black authors in mainstream literary discussions. By analyzing the work of Black writers, we begin to build an understanding of this unique collection of literary history.

In this subsection, you can expect to see analyses of the work of Black authors and critiques of the Black literary tradition. Examine the evolution of writing and how authors reference each others' work for a greater discussion around Black experience. Also engage in the conversations happening around Gaines' body of work specifically.
